Absolutely! The work I do is really rewarding. However, it takes a certain set of personality traits to do well at what I do. You need to be: patient, intelligent, creative. I put patient first because a lot of what I do can be frustrating (most things don’t work right first time) so if you’re not patient, you would probably not hang around long enough to work out the solution.

Definitely. One of the things I do every day is share science news with people – so I am always introducing people to new parts of science, and lots of the things I write about are new to me!

There are so many areas of science, that nobody will be an expert in all of them. When scientists hear about something outside of their specialist area, it could be as ‘new’ to them as it is to everyone else!

To write about science you need to find out about it, so being new to science isn’t necessarily a disadvantage – all you need is a passion for finding out more, the ability to ask good questions, and good communication skills.
