If you mean how long do I stay at work, then it can be 8-10 hours (this is because I work in Japan and I have to stay late because we are 9 hours ahead of the UK – just when I want to go home the UK wakes up and I need to talk to them on the phone).

How much work I get done is an excellent question – you know how some days at school you can’t get much done, and other days your brain is working well and you get loads done? It is the same for me………

I usually work 7-8 hours each day, and the work I can produce in this time can vary.

I like to have at least one noticeable item of work finished every day – it helps me keep motivated. This could be having written a draft of an article, or a press release, or a presentation.

Only doing one of these a day might not seem a lot, but there’s lots of other ‘little’ things that take up time. I make and take phone calls, scribble notes down, brainstorm ideas, write tweets, fill in spreadsheets and make graphs and take photographs. It’s hard to quantify how much of this gets done in a day.

This can be hard to quantify! In terms of working hours, it varies between 7 and 12 hours a day (longer days are sometimes necessary if I’m working on samples that have a short lifespan).

In terms of actual work I complete in the day, I could spend a whole morning thinking about how to solve a problem. This doesn’t seem very efficient, perhaps, but it’s not always possible to instantly come up with the best solution to a problem. On other days, I might have to write a few reports, give a presentation, attend a meeting and run some experiments in the laboratory. So, my work output varies a lot from day to day.
