I don’t study plastic surgery – but there are people out there who do.

Every field of medicine will have people who study it, and doctors carrying out surgery will write and talk about their work to help others who are doing the same thing in other places. This is how the science community works – people share their findings, so everyone benefits from everybody else’s studies.

Plastic surgery (or ‘cosmetic surgery’) can be used for lots of reasons. Sometimes it’s for people who want to change how they look, but often it is to help people who have been injured – such as those who have lost a limb or been badly burnt – so it’s a really interesting field. It’s amazing what cosmetic surgeons can do that you wouldn’t even notice. The TV show ’24 hours in A and E’ has some good examples of this sometimes!

I don’t personally study this, but the techniques I use (like microscopy) have been used to study healing in skin. I have also looked at drugs crossing into the skin, which could possibly be relevant for people who want to help their skin heal after surgery one day.
