Lasers are indeed dangerous. You can set fire to things in the lab (including your own hair if you don’t tie it back) if you’re not careful. The laser could also blind you if you don’t wear goggles! However, I believe that nobody has ever actually been killed by a laser. In the laboratory, you’re far more likely to be injured by tripping over something in the dark. The bottom line is: just be careful all the time 🙂
